About Us

Our Mission

Adderstone Publishing brings distinctive voices, ideas, and creative works to the forefront of modern publishing. We believe publishing has a vital role to play: preserving the stories, ideas, artworks and experiences that shape us, championing voices of old and new, and creating a platform for work that deserves to be seen.

Our name

An adderstone is a stone with a naturally formed hole. In British folklore, looking through one was said to reveal what lies beyond ordinary sight. We can think of no better description of what a good book does. We can think of no better description of what we’re about.

What we publish

Our list spans fiction, non-fiction, art, and history, alongside carefully selected reissues of important or overlooked works. We are drawn to works that are culturally resonant and politically significant, whether they capture the national temper of their time, illuminate the past through original research, or bring a neglected work back into print. What unites the list is not subject but seriousness of intent. We publish writers who have taken the trouble to get it right, and who have something at stake in the telling.

Reissues

Part of our work looks backwards. Books fall out of print for reasons that have little to do with their quality: a publisher folds, a fashion turns, an author dies without an advocate. We seek out those works and return them to circulation in editions that treat them properly: well-made, well-introduced, and placed in the context that makes them legible to a new readership.

Working with us

We are a small house, and we intend to stay one. That means we publish fewer works and give each of them more: more editorial attention, more time.
